Reading stucco cracks before repairing them
A stucco hairline crack at the corner of a window, a map of fine cracks across a whole panel, and a single long diagonal crack running from a sill to the parapet are three different failures: shrinkage, crazing, and movement. Stucco crack repair that caulks all three the same way hides the problem for one season. The crack reopens, usually wider, because the cause was never addressed.
Stucco wall repair starts by tapping the wall. A hollow sound around a crack means the scratch coat has let go of the substrate behind it. That area has to come off and be rebuilt from the substrate, however small the visible crack, because filling a crack in stucco that is no longer bonded to the wall only decorates a panel that is already failing.
Bulging stucco, delaminating stucco and water-stained stucco are the same problem further along: water is behind the system. It got in through a crack, a failed joint or a flashing, saturated the brown coat, and in winter froze and pushed the finish outward. We fix the entry point and the stucco together, because fixing one without the other just restarts the cycle.
Cracked Stucco? We Fix It: the four stucco failures we repair
Hairline & Shrinkage Cracks
Fine cracks that appeared as the stucco cured, or map cracking across a panel, are surface failures in the finish coat. Stucco hairline crack repair means opening the crack slightly, filling it with a compatible elastomeric or cement-based material, and refinishing the panel so the repair disappears. We confirm the wall underneath is sound first.
Movement Cracks & Expansion Joints
Long diagonal cracks from window corners, cracks at floor lines and cracks where stucco meets another material are caused by the building moving. We repair the crack and, where the elevation has no working expansion joint, cut one in so the movement has somewhere to go other than through the new finish.
Bulging & Delamination
Stucco that has bowed outward or sounds hollow has separated from its substrate. Bulging stucco repair and stucco delamination repair remove the loose section back to sound material, repair the lath or masonry, re-establish the key and rebuild the coats. There is no way to reattach stucco that has let go.
Water Damage & Efflorescence
Staining, white efflorescence and soft, crumbling stucco are signs of water trapped in the system. Stucco water damage repair finds the entry point, whether a parapet cap, a window head or a failed joint, corrects it, and rebuilds the saturated stucco once the wall has dried.
Three-Coat Stucco Repair
Where the wall is hollow, the repair is a rebuild: failed stucco removed to sound material, lath or masonry repaired, and scratch, brown and finish coats applied in sequence with proper cure between them. The rebuilt section has the same thickness and strength as the original wall, which a skim coat or a surface patch never does.

Free Stucco Assessment first. Then we fix the substrate.
Every job begins with a free stucco assessment. We sound each elevation, map the cracks by type, and identify which areas are cosmetic and which have already separated from the wall. The map, with photographs, is the basis of the scope.
Diagnosis is crack by crack. Shrinkage cracks get filled and refinished. Movement cracks get a flexible repair and, where needed, an expansion joint. Hollow and bulging areas are marked for removal and rebuild. Water-damaged areas get the entry point corrected before any stucco is replaced.
The written scope lists each area and its repair method so you can see why a small crack may call for a larger rebuild. Our in-house crews repair at the substrate, perform a three-coat stucco repair where the wall is hollow, and finish with a color-matched coat. Close-out photographs document every repaired area.
