New stucco installation done right — from the start
Stucco is one of the most durable and cost-effective facade systems available — when installed correctly. A properly applied three-coat Portland cement stucco system provides decades of weather protection, impact resistance, and architectural flexibility.
The challenge is execution. Each coat has specific requirements for thickness, timing, and curing. The substrate preparation, lath attachment, and moisture management details determine whether the system performs for 50 years or fails in 5. In NYC's demanding climate, there's no room for shortcuts.
What makes stucco installation succeed or fail
Substrate Preparation
The surface receiving stucco must be clean, sound, and properly detailed with moisture barriers and weep screeds. Inadequate prep is the #1 cause of premature stucco failure.
Lath Installation
Metal lath must be properly gauged, lapped, and secured. It provides the mechanical bond that holds the entire stucco system to the building. Poor lath means poor adhesion.
Three-Coat Application
Scratch coat, brown coat, finish coat — each with specific thickness and cure time requirements. Rushing between coats or skipping proper curing guarantees cracking and delamination.
Moisture Management
Weather-resistive barriers, weep screeds, and control joints must be properly detailed to manage moisture within the wall assembly. Stucco that traps water destroys what it's supposed to protect.
Traditional three-coat methodology
We install traditional Portland cement stucco using the three-coat process — scratch coat for mechanical bond, brown coat for thickness and leveling, finish coat for weather resistance and appearance. Each coat cures properly before the next is applied.
Attention to details — control joints at proper spacing, weep screeds at grade and floor lines, sealant joints at penetrations — is what separates stucco that performs from stucco that fails. We detail each condition per manufacturer specifications and industry standards.
